What Is Psychotherapy?

I won't bother you with the dry and rather complex definition of "psychotherapy." In layman’s terms, psychotherapy is simply ‘guidance in the hope of resolution through personal difficulties’. There are many different approaches to therapy, and all have been proven to work in varying degrees. Success depends on a safe environment which promotes a trusting and accepting relationship between the therapist and the client.

My Approach

I apply a unique and creative approach to therapy that is rooted in both transpersonal and Buddhist philosophies. Transpersonal therapy is defined as, "The study of humanity’s highest potential, and with the recognition, understanding, and realization of unitive, spiritual, and transcendent states of consciousness" (Lajoie and Shapiro, 1992). Buddhist therapy uses Buddhist principles with the ultimate goal of enlightenment. I incorporate a number of different practices into my approach including mindfulness meditation, spirituality, yoga, and the arts. These practices are used to help the inner healing process and deal with common challenges including resentments, fears, deep-seated wounds, and other lingering "unfinished business" from our past.
